For more than two decades, the Access 4 Learning (A4L) Community has done one thing relentlessly well: bring education’s many voices together to solve the hard, shared problems of managing and protecting learner data. Schools and districts, states and ministries, vendors and consultants — all at the same table, building open standards and practical tools that no single organization could deliver alone.
Today, we’re proud to share an important milestone in that journey. On June 10, 2026, the A4L Community formally adopted a refreshed Mission and Vision — statements that reflect not only who we are, but who our community has asked us to become.
Our Mission
“To unite education stakeholders in developing open, learner-centered data standards, tools, and best practices that ensure trust, confidence and reliability through seamless connectivity, privacy, and security across learning environments.”
Our Vision
“A world where every learner is empowered by a trusted, open, and interoperable education ecosystem — where privacy is foundational, standards are shared, and seamless connectivity unlocks opportunity for all.”
Why Refresh These Statements Now?
A mission and vision are not decorations for a website footer. They are the compass an organization steers by — the test we hold every decision, every project team, and every specification against. And like any good compass, they need to point toward where the community is actually headed.
The world our members work in has changed. Data breaches are escalating in both frequency and severity. Privacy expectations have grown more sophisticated and more urgent. The line between “moving data well” and “protecting data well” has all but disappeared — you simply cannot have one without the other. Our members told us, clearly and consistently, that they needed their Community’s foundational language to reflect that reality.
So we listened. These statements were not written in a boardroom in isolation; they were shaped by the needs and desires of the people who are the A4L Community. The emphasis on being learner-centered keeps students at the heart of the work. The insistence that privacy is foundational — not an afterthought bolted on later — names what our members live every day. And the language of trust, confidence, and reliability speaks to the outcome we exist to deliver: educators and families who can rely on the systems behind the classroom, so teachers are free to do what they do best — teach.
Refreshing our mission and vision is, at its core, an act of accountability to the community we serve. It ensures that as the ecosystem evolves, the words guiding us evolve with it.
A Refreshed Identity: SDPC and SIF, Powered by A4L
This renewal of purpose arrives alongside a refresh of how we present the Community itself. Going forward, our two flagship efforts are unified clearly under one banner:
- The Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) — Powered by A4L
- The Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) — Powered by A4L
This isn’t a change of substance so much as a change of clarity. SDPC and SIF have always been complementary halves of the same whole: SIF as the open, freely available technical blueprint that connects learning applications, and SDPC as the practical, real-world engine for protecting learner information. Positioning both as “Powered by A4L” reflects the integrated Community they’ve always belonged to — interoperability and privacy, securing and connecting, working as one.
Looking Ahead
A refreshed mission and vision are a beginning, not a conclusion. They set the direction; the work of getting there belongs to all of us. Whether you represent a school, a district, a state agency, a ministry, or a marketplace provider, your voice and contributions are this Community’s greatest strength.
We invite you to read these statements, share them, and — most importantly — help us live up to them. Together, we’ll keep connecting and securing effective learning ecosystems for every learner.
